MENTAL MUTHA MEETS JEMMA WILLSON

Are you a mental Mum or a Mum that’s mental?

Hmmm, I suppose I'm a bit of both-my children would describe me as a mental Mum I think-I never show a side that would make them think otherwise. We're always jumping around, dancing and singing!

But I am also a Mum that's mental-if you count the issues I have and the fact I'm a Mum, that's kind of what you end up with!

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Meditate? Talk? Hide?

Cry? That wasn't on the options was it-I don't get chance to meditate or hide-I have children! I try and talk it through-but I haven't yet found that someone who can truly make a difference to how I feel.

Do you discuss your mental health with your mum mates?

No. My Mum mates are exactly that-mates I see when dropping my child places. I don't go into any conversation that would possibly leave me feeling judged, or make others feel awkward.

How do you tackle mental health chats with your kid’s?

We're open about positivity in our house. Myself, and both of my children have what we call "positivity walls". We have quotes, pictures-anything that make us happy-and the "positivity wall" is situated where we'll see it before we go to sleep, and when we wake up.

It's really important to me, that, although my children don't know about my issues, they understand they can come to me and discuss their feelings.

Who helps you in the dark? (In your pits, your mental rock bottom - who is your hero?)

My Husband Keiron-most of the time. He's still not 100% understanding of all of my issues, but that's not his fault-it takes time to understand these things.

My Dad, although he helps me see reason a lot, is unable to fully help by disassociating himself from me, because he's a qualified counsellor-and the first rule of counselling, is....don't talk about counselling-wait, no it's not-it's don't counsel family or friends.

What helps you in the light? (Meditation? Procrastination? Perspiration? People?)

Procrastination is my middle name-seriously! Sometimes, I just whack on Insta stories, and crack on yapping away-not caring if anyone hears me-it just helps.

Music also helps me massively-I recently purchased an Amazon Echo, and it was an actual game-changer. Podcasts also help me too-there's nothing like listening to My Dad Wrote a Porno (you have to listen to it), and having a giggle!

Is it hard to talk about your mental health? (Doesn't mean on Instagram necessarily, but do you feel the stigma is lifting and do you feel safe to speak your mind, even if it is possibly 'mental'?)

Yes. I still don't feel like the stigma has lifted enough to make me comfortable with discussing my issues with everyone. People are still super uneducated in the subject of mental health-so often I see comments on social media regarding labels people like to give themselves-and those of us who have been diagnosed know how unhelpful those comments are. I fully believe however, that one day there will be no stigma attached. I think we have to have that faith in order to move forward and deal with our issues effectively without fear of being judged.

Where’s your head at? (Right here in this moment, today)

Honestly? It's not great today. Today is what I call a "bad day". My Husband started a new job, meaning, for the first time in three years, he was out of the house before any of us got up. I panicked the entire day-worrying about whether the children were going to need more from me than I had in me to give. I realised today, how much I really rely on him.

Soft Play or Rehab?

I HATE soft play! Rehab all the way!

Jacobs Creek or a Jacobs Cracker?

Both! Jacobs Cracker with cheese on, with some Jacobs Creek!

Nut Job or Nut Allergy?

Nut job-need I say more?

Self Care or Self Sabotage?

Self Care-one of the most important things I use to get me through life.

Journal or jog?

Journal-diarising my thoughts centres me.

Ask for help or happy to hermit?

Ask for help when you know you need it-if hermit'ing is your thing and you're happy doing that for now-go with it.
