MENTAL MUTHA MEETS RACHEL EDWARDS
Are you a mental Mum or a Mum that’s mental?
Good question! I think my kids would say I am a mum that's mental.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Meditate? Talk? Hide?
In the past, my instinct has been to run away and hide, but I quickly learned that the problems don't go away. A therapist taught me the importance of self-care and this has become a massive part of my life in the last few years. I have several 'loves' that help me manage my mental health. I love to run, and joined Mums on the Run running club last year which has been incredibly powerful for me. We have a mental health ambassador and our coaches have helped me achieve so much. I love the freedom of running out your worries or frustrations. I am a Christian and I love to pray and spend time with God, and also ask my girlfriends to pray with me and for me when I am feeling overwhelmed. I love to write; blogs, articles, stories and songs, both professionally and personally. I also love Young Living essential oils and have been using them to support my emotions and mental health since last Summer. They have been so life-changing for me that I now run a business sharing them!
Do you discuss your mental health with your mum mates?
Yes, I am a chronic over-sharer and wear my heart on my sleeve. I don't tell the world and his wife the ins and outs, but I do have a close circle of trusted friends who I have sat with, cried on and cuddled during bouts of depression and anxiety. I am also blessed with an incredibly supportive husband who has been my absolute rock throughout.
How do you tackle mental health chats with your kid’s?
If I am feeling emotional or tired I will tell them. Not to overwhelm them, but to reassure them that it is okay to have an 'off' day, and that we can talk about our feelings. I ask my children how they feel every day, and sometimes use analogies such as asking if they feel light like a butterfly or heavy like an elephant. We also share our highs and lows of the day over the dinner table to celebrate the great and share the burden of the not to great.
Who helps you in the dark? (In your pits, your mental rock bottom - who is your hero?)
My hero is Jesus, he held my hand, pulled me from the darkest pit and set me back on my feet again. Close second is my husband who's unfailing love, support and prayer has given me strength and hope to get through the tough times.
What helps you in the light? (Meditation? Procrastination? Perspiration? People?)
I love being with people. I have some truly wonderful friends who I love spending time with over coffee and playdates, but my favourite people in the world are my family.
Is it hard to talk about your mental health? (Doesn't mean on Instagram necessarily, but do you feel the stigma is lifting and do you feel safe to speak your mind, even if it is possibly 'mental'?)
I have never felt that I can't talk about mental health, but I definitely feel it is a more accepted subject now then it was when I first suffered with PND in 2013. I love that mental health is becoming less and less of a taboo subject. I have been very open about my struggles and it has always surprised people because they would say "Oh I would never have known, you always seem so happy/smiley/look good" etc. I think women, in particular, are very good at putting on a brave face, and although there is nothing wrong with that, I think it is so incredibly vital that we share when we are struggling too.
Where’s your head at? (Right here in this moment, today)
My head is in a good place right now. Busy with the business but ready for more. I am feeling more myself than I have done in a long time and am super excited about what the future holds for my family and I.
