MENTAL MUTHA MEETS CLEMMIE TELFORD

Are you a mental Mum or a Mum that’s mental?

Errrrr I don't know! Neither sound that appealing! I am a Mum (of two very nearly three). I have suffered with mental health shizzle for as long as I can remember. Certainly since I was a teenager, so can’t blame the nippers for being the trigger.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Meditate? Talk? Hide?

I write lists! They help me process my thoughts. I guess it’s kind of like talking but using your hands, does that make sense?

Do you discuss your mental health with your mum mates?

I do now! I discuss mental health with anyone who will listen. Part of the problem with mental health is it can trick you into thinking you are weird for suffering with feelings of anxiety or depression. That just isn’t the case. Normalising the way we talk about mental health is so important….

How do you tackle mental health chats with your kid’s?

For me, as a Mum of 2 boys, I’ve been very concious of trying to quash the gendered cliches of boys needing to be ‘being brave’ and ‘man-up’. You’d be surprised how ingrained that type of dialogue is.  Instead I tell them that it’s ok to cry. To be nervous. To talk about your feelings and to want to play gently!

Who helps you in the dark?

My husband. My sister has saved me a few times as well as my mate Polly. She came to Peckham on a rainy Sunday night and took me for a drink when I was at my lowest and I’ve never forgotten it.

And my kids of course! They always always bring the light and laughter.

What helps you in the light? (Meditation? Procrastination? Perspiration? People?)

Getting outside! Fresh air is such an underestimated commodity! And stepping away from coffee. When my mental health is a bit amiss,  caffeine only makes it worse!

Where’s your head at? (Right here in this moment, today)

I’m pretty good. I’m waiting for baby 3 to show up (currently 40+3). Of course impending labour/life-changing events is making me feel a bit anxious. But I trying my best to enjoy this final chilled days: naps, reading books, baths etc. That said I still like her to show up sometime soon!!

Soft Play or Rehab?

Anything in the world is better than Soft Play.

Jacobs Creek or a Jacobs Cracker?

Creek. Although I’ve been pregnant and sober since May!

Nut Job or Nut Allergy?

I love a nut! Particularly a cashew.

Self Care or Self Sabotage?

Care. Everytime. Usually involving expensive candles and bath products.

Journal or jog?

Journal - or more specifically lists at MotherofAllLists.com (shameless plug there).

Ask for help or happy to hermit?

Ask for help. Even if not in person. Send that Whatsapp reaching out, you’ll never regret it.
